2024 Can Sumoi ‘Muntanya’ Xarel-lo | Macabeu, Penedes DO, Spain
Sort of a changing of the guards has taken place here at Webster’s and while we are morose about the Raventos de la Finca leaving our glass pur list we are elated to announce its predecessor and from the same family. Pepe Raventos and his childhood friend and business shadow Francesc Escala project extends to amazing terriers beyond the family’s estate while always keeping to biodynamic farming practices. Muntanya is an exquisite fresh and serious elaboration of sparkling wine and we are grateful for the opportunity to pour it for you.

NV La Collina 'Quaresimo' Lambrusco dell'Emilia, Emilia-Romagna, Italy
Quite possibly the most enjoyed Lambrusco we've offered is back and I couldn't be happier! La Collina is an organic/biodynamic farming cooperative that not only produces this gem, also vegetables, grains, livestock, bees, and dairy for Parmagiano-Reggiano. Enjoy this zippy, perky, fizzy red with meat and cheese selections.

2023 Malvira, Arneis, Roero, Piedmont, Italy
Probably the most revered house for the variety, Malvira's claim to be the resurrector of Arneis is completely grounded. Saglietto is the oldest vineyard of the Damonte family and the production of Arneis grapes of Malvirà began in this vineyard. The Damonte’s have championed the variety producing it from organically farmed vineyards since 2017 and elaborating in the variety’s uniqueness and connection to the region. Arneis is fresh with fruity aromas highlighting citrus balanced with structure and savoriness.

2022 Le Coste Bianco, Procanico, Lazio, Italy
Gianmarco Antonuzzi and Clémentine Bouveron tend around fourteen hectares of vines, around Lago di Bolsena near Gianmarco’s childhood town of Gradoli in Lazio’s north. They worked for many years for some of France’s great vignerons and their time spent with the likes of Bruno Schueller and Dard et Ribo has been influential on their work. Their picturesque vineyards sit amongst chestnut trees, shrubs, oaks and the olive trees from which they produce their excellent olio. The soils are of volcanic origin and are rich in iron and minerals. Bianco 2022 is Procanico with the balance being made up of Malvasia, Roscetto, Pedino, Vermentino, Romanesco and Ansonica.

2024 Julian Haart, 1000L, Riesling, Piesport, Mosel, Germany
The entire county was ravaged by an early bud break and then a late frost. Then the rain and clouds and cooler weather inhibited ripeness but as Julian said, “2024 had rain, ok, but no fog. It would rain, but then an hour later everything is dry. It’s the fog that scares me”. Some of the most beautiful flavors thrive in the shade which explains the greatness that Haart was able to coax from this vintage. Subtle sweet aromas from rocks and gravel have to be sniffed out of the glass to bear fruit. The body is linear, taught while the finish is long and expertly dry.

2022 Pepe Raventós Malvasia de Sitges, Penedes, Spain
This version of Malvasia is known for its aromatic profile showing off ripe orchard fruit, honey, herbal and salty notes, high acidity, and long finish. Vinya la Plana refers to the vineyard Pepe farms organically and the wines he ferments in concrete aging on lees for added complexity. It’s a concentrated and refreshing wine.

2022 Saalwæchter, Weisser Burgunder, Rheinhessen, Germany,
Carsten’s Weiss Burgunder (Pinot Blanc) is also a featherweight, at least on the paper of its back label: a mere 12%. Yet the wine has a certain weight, a certain swagger. It is clear and saline, citrus with green herbal details, a crystalline minerality, glowing and transparent-feeling. This is stunning.

SKIN CONTACT WHITE 'ORANGE WINE'

2023 Judith Beck Mish Mash, Field Blend, Neusiedlersee, Burganland Austria
Just as advertised Beck has assembled a ‘Mish Mash’ of varieties planted on the estate including Gruner Veltliner, Neuburger, Weissburgunder, Welsschriesling, Zweigelt, Scheurebe and others. Directly pressing the red varieties and leaving the whites to macerate on the skins for 4 days evokes subtle floral aromas with plum, clementine, quince popping out here and there as the soft tannins elaborate on the palette.

RED WINE

2023 Fossil & Fawn Pinot Noir Willamette Valley, Oregon
We have tasted countless Pinot’s from this region as it’s kind of a calling card for the Valley. Many stand out as distinctly domestic with new world stylings. Every once and a while there is an outlier which was the case when Jim Fischer brought us this version boasting an old world flair. The aroma is ethereal, earthy with nuanced fruit and herbs under a blanket of minerality. The body is fresh and taut but built for drinking on its own or great with foods.

2024 Envinate Albahra, Garnacha Tintorera, Moravia Agria, Castilla-La Mancha, Spain
Castilian for “small sea” Albahra is named for the vineyard area in the Almansa region close to the town of Albacete, located at the southeastern tip of Castilla-La Mancha. The wine has concentrated sun kissed aromas from dark ripe fruit and hot rocks. It’s juicy and lively with velvety tannin that rams up with a little brightness on the finish.

2023 Frédéric Mabileau Les Rouillieres Cabernet Franc, Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil, Loire, France
Les Rouillères is the Mabileau family’s calling card; pure, unadulterated Cabernet Franc made with minimal intervention; organic fruit, gentle extraction, absolutely no oak and a small amount of sulfur. It clearly expresses Cabernet Franc grown on the sandy gravel soils of Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil. The nose this vintage exibits that tell tale bell pepper with charming, red-black fruit and a touch of pencil shavings, while the palate bursts with juicy and succulent fruit coated in sweet, ripe tannins.

2023 Ridge Three Valleys, Zinfandel | Carignane | Petite Sirah | Mataro | Alicante Bouschet, Sonoma County, California
Ruby red color, blackberry and raspberry on the nose this Medium bodied with smooth tannins, plum fruit and a note of vanilla on the finish. Since its inception, Ridge has focused on single vineyard wines. Three Valleys, a careful combining of parcels from complementary vineyards, is the exception. The vineyards are farmed biodynamically so no inoculation is necessary. The wine is aged for 12 months in 20% new oak and various ages of used barrels.

2021 Angelo Negro, 'Prachiosso', Nebbiolo, Roero, Piemonte, Italy
The prized ‘Prachiosso’ vineyard was cultivated with vines as far back as 1200. It is a south facing plot on calcareous sandy soil created as the Adriatic Sea receded and left us what is now the Po river. The namesake from Latin ‘Pratum chiusum’, translates to ‘a closed meadow’ describing the exposure and orientation of the hillside. Year after year this is one of my favorite wines, quintessential DOCG Nebbiolo but at a value and ready to go moments after pulling the cork. If you love it make sure you take one home to stash somewhere to forget about as long as you can.

2024 Domaine Grès Saint. Vincent, Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Côtes du Rhône Villages, France
Black plum, cured green and black olives, orange pulp and smoky bramble dominate the nose; the palate is deep and luxurious with acidity cutting the richness into an irresistible treat of a wine. Despite being a co-op wine, the group Les Vignerons D’ Estézargues uses organically grown and hand harvested fruit so the indigenous yeasts thrive to ferment in enamel-lined tanks; no fining, no filtration.

FORTIFIED, OXIDATIVE & SWEET

2019 Château La Rame, Sémillon, AOC Sainte-Croix-Du-Mont, Bordeaux , France
South east of Bordeaux proper Château La Rame sits on one of the most prized and historical sites in the region. 20 hectares overlooking the Garonne River are south facing clay and limestone rich soils filled with ancient sea fossils. The vineyards are mostly 50 year old Semillon from where the Sainte Croix du Mont “vin liquoreux” is produced. The botrytis affected fruit naturally loses water weight concentrating aromatics and flavor into a cornucopia of stone and tropical fruit. Alcohol is still present at 13% abv and balanced perfectly with acid and residual sugar. Absolutely delightful and a great value compared to more popular sweet wines. 2 oz

MV Bodegas Yuste, Palomino Fino, Manzanilla Sanlúcar de Barrameda, Andalusia, Spain
Yuste adopted a 19th century solera on his own to produce a complex and beguiling Manzanilla, between 8 and 10 years of age. This comes from keg and not bottle, so the Sherry “purist” can’t complain that it’s not “fresh.”
